Chapter 2 of Bridge Agate

Elli opened her eyes looking around her with her head and hair brushing the cold pavement. She took a deep breath, her nose and throat hurt and her eyes stung. Looking around trying to find some of the girls it was dark and the atmosphere was heavy, she moved her upper body in an upwards motion only to realize that her left feet was bruised causing her to moan. “That can't be good for work unless someone is into it.”She looked around “Fuck what happened, how long I was out?”

She investigated the absurdly quite street. “My throat hurts fumes”. There was nothing, no one was outside. Thrown baskets and carriages were dumped on the road. The fog mixed with ship fumes made it hard for her to see any much further. She cupped her ankle in an attempt to figure out what has happened .If it was only a scratch then everything would work out with a little ointment and a tea. She didn’t have money for a doctor and prayed quietly for a bruise or even a small scar. In her room there was a small window she’d decorated with a few small pots with plants. The leaves made perfect tea and other beverages and sometimes she dried them out and added them to her rolling tobacco for more scent and less stingy smoke breath.

From the south side of the road she heard walking and chains rattling on the concrete blocks on the road. Her eyes wide open trying to find something to hide herself.

-I can’t see anything in this fucking place. A very mousey voice echoed
-We had to get assigned in this goddamn place? I swear yesterday I saw a man eat a raw fish. Raw fish Poul can you imagine?
A groan or maybe it was a burp came out of one of them.

People of force are not allowed to meddle with Tearups or well anyone from the city. This intrusions was a time for them to roam stranger’s bodies behind houses or even in the middle of the street without anyone knowing. She shouldn’t be found. Sweat down her spine and a throb came up her throat. They were animals and with no boundaries when it came to body encounters. Girls on their off work days drunk at the bar and told sad work stories laughing at each other clicking their glasses in the air.
Someone whistle from the other side in the shadows below a huge plant pot. A wooden block was thrown gently near her feet.

Did she saw a face? Was it a smile?
-What am I supposed to do with that? She whispered with her voice cracking as she heard the rattling getting closer.
There she stayed for some seconds waiting for a response.

-How about hiding? A voice heard from the shadows calm and heavy. –Also now is a good time to do it.

She blinked and grabbed the wood slowly trying not to make a sound and went behind a small wooden vinegar barrel. The owner had those out because he also traded vinegar in the Capitals.

She crawled behind it and placed the wooden panel in front of her feet to stabilize it. She hid in the shadows.
The Flies where near. Her blood pumped in every vein in her body. It was the law that when the horn echoed in the city people where obligated to move inside a place a house or a store and lock themselves in order to make it easier for the Flies to find the trespasser. Elliana wasn’t .She was on the streets bleeding.

The city was a port and a passage. Elders say it was made only for trading purposes and later on some rejects and convicted felonies from other cities built homes here. They developed an ongoing port at the bottom of the bridge which had workers unload and reload products for traders to move to the south. Down on the roots where some cabins that mechanics sometimes stayed when a big ship came and needed an urgent repair. She was invited down there once. It was filthy and sweaty. The motel owner took her and threw her out of their door.
-Don’t fuck it up, take as much as you can and more. I need money.
-I…ok…sorry…but…someti.
-Are you stupid? Knock the fucking door. He whispered and left.

The shipmen were kind and offered her food and talked to her a little bit. They even offered her alcohol and juice afterwards.  One told her that he would come for her and gave her a green piece of cloth on her way out. It took her a few hours to return back to the motel. She got lost three times.

Elliana hold her breath as she heard the flies moving next to her. She felt fumes in her nostrils “They threw fumes again!?” she got  light headed and her eyes tear up. Laughing heard from far away
-That will saw them trespassers. I was having lunch fucking hell with this place.

She slowly lost control of her body and fell on her back.
